The result of the 2024 elections is finished: Donald Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
According to the Associated Press, at the time of writing this, Trump won the election with 277 electoral college votes, compared to Harris’ 224 votes. These results are official as of 10:22 AM on November 6th.
There were initial concerns about Trump’s eligibility to run for office, as he was convicted of multiple crimes, mainly being found guilty of falsifying business records. He’s been charged with four other criminal counts, including conspiracy to defraud the US and conspiracy against the rights of citizens.
Despite these allegations and convictions, Trump was still eligible to run for president; American laws do not prevent a candidate from running for president with outstanding crimes against them.
Trump’s victory is notably surprising, as he claimed all 7 of the major swing states: Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
Last election, when President Biden secured the 2020 presidency, he won Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. These notable battleground states have flipped to support Trump’s campaign and gave him the momentum required to take the presidency.
Trump was also able to secure the popular vote, stating in his victory speech that: “Thank you. Winning the popular vote was very nice, very nice, I will tell you. It’s a great, great feeling of love. We have a great feeling of love in this very large room with unbelievable people standing by my side.”
Trump went on his victory speech to congratulate the Republicans on taking the Senate, which grants massive power to the party. The Republican party now owns the Senate, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court. Barring any major surprises, they’ll also take control of the House of Representatives.
Afterward, he then congratulated his Vice President, JD Vance, before handing it off to Vance to speak.
Vance spoke to the people, reassuring them that “…Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re never going to stop fighting for you, for your dreams, for the future of your children. And after the greatest political comeback in American history, we’re going to lead the greatest economic comeback in American history under Donald Trump’s leadership.”
Trump will take office on January 20th, 2025.
