The New Biomed focus Track at SCH is now underway. This is a program that was started by the Chair of Science Mr.Stein. This programed is focused on students who have an interest in biomedical research, biomedical engineering, and more. This program offers courses to help prepare these students for a future career in this line of work. This programed is offered to current ninth graders because it is a full four-year program. Here is my interview with biology teacher Lisa Queeno.
Can you describe the new biomedical track?
“The biomedical Science Focus track is a brand new program that requires students to complete specific coursework and extracurricular science hours during the summer and or after school, if their schedule allows, qualifying for a certificate of excellence at graduation. Only current ninth graders may apply. As the program is all four years of Upper School it is our way of rewarding our best and most motivated biomedical students with unique and valuable hands-on experience for a future career in healthcare biomedical engineering research and more.”
How will this program prepare students for college?
“Being a member of the Biomed program will demonstrate students’ commitment to the subject and undoubtedly increase their chances of being admitted to their first-choice biomed programs! It’s a certificate that says you are one of us, you are just the most dedicated biology students.”
Ms.Queeno was also asked, What went into starting this program?
“Biomed at SCH is the brainchild of the science department had Scott Stein and has been in the works for over a decade!”
Who is running this program?
“I am the program coordinator and Mr. Stein will oversee it. We will work together to interview our first cohort of applicants this spring.”
Who will be teaching these classes and where do these classes take place?
“There are no new classes. Students are expected to take specific courses similar to how college students take classes in their major.”
How does one apply for this program?
The program is open to current ninth graders and they will apply before course selection in Winter/Spring 2025. The application process will involve interviews, a form, and a personal essay. (Ms.Queeno)
