The SCH Men’s Varsity Golf team ended its four-year Inter-Ac win drought at Waynesborough Country Club during the Malvern Prep Invitational on Wednesday, October 16th. SCH Golf nearly snapped the streak several times during the season but finally ended it in the last match.
The Devils started the season poorly, losing by a large deficit. In the first Inter-Ac match of the season at Gulph Mills Golf Club, the golf team shot 218, their highest score. This match was highlighted by rounds of 42 from Alex Topping and 43 from this reporter. Other scorers in this match were Stokes Tate and Brandon Varga, who both shot 44, and Finn Cooper, who shot 45. Despite the large loss, senior captain Alex Topping was still hopeful, stating, “This is the best team we’ve had in in at least four years, maybe more.”
Towards the middle of the season, the Devils golf team played in their home invitational at Sunnybrook Golf Club. The team practices at this course daily during the golf season so they had lots of experience with the layout. The team relied on this course knowledge throughout the day and hoped to pick up a crucial mid-season win. Ultimately the Devils fell just short of a win against Germantown Academy with a score of 201, just one stroke behind GA who came in with a 200. Commenting on the near win at Sunnybrook, Topping stated, “Although we did have the home advantage at Sunnybrook, I think the course was set up and playing pretty hard on Tuesday,” and Senior golfer, Charlie Greenberg referred to the score of 201 from SCH stating, “you know, it’s impressive, and we’re definitely on our way to breaking 200.
While Charlie may have been wrong about the team breaking 200 by the end of the year, they did accomplish something that many golfers thought was impossible: snapping the 4-year win drought. The Devils showed up to Waynesborough Club for one last match. The seniors on the team had nearly lost hope of a win in their high school golf careers, but they managed to pull through with the upset win against GA. The final scoreboard read SCH 208 and GA 216. The Devils managed to pull off a massive 8-stroke win over one of our major rivals.
