On Friday, November 15th, a group of Campus Lantern staffers met in the Haber Room to discuss their outlooks on the recent National Scholastic Press Association Conference they attended in downtown Philadelphia. The goal of the session was to gather ideas from the NSPAC and create a plan for the future as staff continues to grow. As a new publication, The Lantern still has a lot of development ahead of it. While some schools across the nation have editorial boards of thirty students, our official staff is around that same number.
The first issue to address was the organization of the staff. During the meeting, the team planned an organizational chart that outlines who the section editors are and who reporters should ask for help depending on what they are writing about. Sophomore writer Clare Murphey said, “The meeting was very beneficial. We were able to learn from other schools at the conference and, using that, make the framework for our own paper going forward.”
As the recently appointed junior editor-in-chief, Michael Goff attended both the conference and the meeting. He had a large role in creating the organization chart. “We’ve definitely made a lot of progress,” Goff noted. “Some of the schools we saw at the conference have very organized structures, and we’re doing our best to replicate that. Things like the new org chart will help us be much more efficient and get out higher quality work.”
As Goff said, The Lantern is getting brighter, and it will only keep growing. Participation is expected to increase now that weekly meetings are being moved to the Haber Room.
