Mrs .MacMullan is known for her amazing photos around the SCH campus, but little is known about her love for hiking. “Fun fact, I actually went on the ninth-grade Outward Bound trip in 2019,” said MacMullan.
Julia MacMullan is the director of marketing at SCH. Outside of the SCH community, MacMullan loves to hike the Wissahickon trails. She lives right next to the Green Ribbon trail in Ambler, so she is able to get out and hike a good amount.
Where did her interest in the outdoors come from? “I would say my mom was really into the outdoors, so we did a lot of hiking when we were really little,” MacMullan said. “We all went on a camping trip. I think I was three or four, and I can’t remember exactly where. I grew up in Chicago, and we went somewhere in Illinois, and we went with friends, and we slept all together in a log cabin, and our friend’s husband snored, and I was terrified that it was a bear in the log cabin.”
Today MacMullan hikes and camps with her daughter mostly near their house in Ambler. Over the years she has gotten all of the equipment she needs for this hobby. “I do have a lot of gear. When I graduated college, I lived in California, I lived in LA and I went a lot with my friends. And over those years, I accumulated just a lot of stuff from REI. So I had a tent. I have a double sleeping bag, I have a propane stove. … while I was in college I was abroad in New Zealand, and they have a really big, like, REI-type store, but it’s, like, less expensive than REI, and it’s called Kathmandu, and, like, I got all this stuff there that was either hyper on sale or was reused.”
When asked where her dream place to go camping would be she said, “I would love to hike through Canada again someday with my daughter. Probably out west by Vancouver.”
“We had such fun times driving up the California coast, hiking, camping, and cooking. I think why I love camping: because it not only connects me to nature, and grounds me, but when you’re camping with friends it levels the playing field. No matter what “type” of person you are you all have to deal with the elements together and it bonds you together as people and bonds you closer to nature,” said MacMullan
