Two years ago senior Nick Donato began advocating for esports to be a sports credit at SCH. Now, sophomore Thomas Hanna is trying to make an SCH esports team a reality.
“It was a little bit of a process,” said Donato. “Ultimately, I wanted to get an independent athletic waiver from playing eSports through an outside team to count as a sports credit at SCH. It was a kind of long and lengthy process. First, I had to email the athletic department and agree to some terms, and then where it ultimately failed for me was SCH agreed; however, truthfully, I didn’t play video games that competitively, and I couldn’t really find a team to join. So I couldn’t actually uphold my end of trying to find a team that I could join and participate in a league with enough scheduled meeting hours.”
Athletic Director Dave Wilson said, “It’s still a long away from becoming a team, for the foreseeable future, it will just be a club or activity.”
So, if you’re looking to join an esports team in the next couple of years your best bet will most likely be to join a team outside of school.
