The Trump Administration plans to dismantle the Department of Education. The Department of Education creates and implements education policies, distributes federal funding, ensures all students have equal access to education, collects and analyzes data on education, and more. On March 20, 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order to “return power over education instead of bureaucracies.” This means states will be in charge of their educational programs and implementing educational laws. The order states the education secretary will, “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities.” Any remaining Department funds will not promote or continue DEI or gender ideology. The department will still function for Title I funding for low-income schools, Pell grants, and money for children with disabilities.
The Department of Education was created in 1979 by Congress. The Trump administration claims that since then, taxpayers have been burdened with tens of billions of dollars wasted on promoting progressive ideas and programs. With “radical” agendas and ideologies being implemented by the department, the administration looks to return to the power of curriculum and programs to states so parents are in more control of their children’s education.
