The United States Department of Justice, along with President Trump, has sued the state of Pennsylvania for not sharing its voter rolls, which contain private information about its citizens.
Pennsylvania’s Department of State Secretary Al Schmidt has been advocating for maintaining Pennsylvanian voter privacy, saying that the request and lawsuit were unjust and unlawful while the Department of Justice has been stating that Pennsylvania, as well as other states, has an obligation to ensure that voter information is secure and accessible. This has led to the Department of Justice suing the state of Pennsylvania for keeping its voter rolls and, therefore, its citizens’ private information safe.
This request by the Department of Justice was first made known to the citizens of Pennsylvania through The Philadelphia Inquirer on September 25, 2025, with the situation still ongoing.
“I have an obligation to protect the personal information that Pennsylvania voters entrust us with, and I take that obligation extremely seriously,” said Al Schmidt, Pennsylvania Department of State Secretary.
Despite the lawsuit seeming severe, recent data leaks have made this lawsuit an uphill battle for the Department of Justice.
