The Campus Lantern

Guitarist, Bowie and Lennon collaborator, visits SCH

Famous Puerto Rican guitarist Carlos Alomar visited with Laureilie, Hilltones, and the upper and middle school jazz bands.

Mr. Alomar has worked with David Bowie and John Lennon on multiple occasions, helping write songs such as “Sister Midnight” with Bowie and playing with him on “Fame” and “Stay,” as well as other songs and albums such as “Station to Station.”

Mr. Alomar shared his vast knowledge of music and the music industry.  In the band room he listened to the two jazz bands play their composition of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. Then Mr. Alomar shared some advice on how the jazz band could improve their performance of the piece. Most notably, he emphasized the necessity of a jazz group playing “free.”

Every musician in the Jazz band is extremely thankful to Mr. Alomar for his time, during which he undoubtedly made us better individual musicians as well as an improved group.
