All season long, SCH’s coaches have preached an old-school style of play that he calls the “right school” of basketball. The curriculum only requires one thing: hustle. Head Coach Julian McFadden ’06 preached that same thought pre-game to his team.
“It’s gonna come down to effort,” said Coach McFadden.

SCH decided to take the sayings of their coaches to heart this Tuesday in a crucial 69-61 victory over Inter-Ac rival Malvern Prep, out hustling their opponent all night to improve their Inter-Ac record to 3-1.
Senior captain and star forward Kam Waters spoke after the game about that “underdog mentality.”
SCH certainly looked to be the underdog against Malvern, who was coming fresh off the heels of a big win against Haverford, another physical team that’s considered a contender.
The Devils had a good bit of momentum, though, as they came out of a win against Episcopal, setting both teams up for a high-powered matchup with everything on the line.
SCH grabbed a quick lead in the first quarter, and from then on, they kept their handle on the lead for the majority of the game. They played with the hustle their coaches have preached, and it propelled them to victory.
However, in a deviation from their usual style of play, the Devils lacked a true “leading player” on the offensive end throughout this game. Senior Keni Williams didn’t play with his usual dominance (although he still played well), and Owen Kelly ’27 didn’t put up one of his stat-stuffing performances.
Instead, a balanced, well-rounded attack from the Devils kept them moving. Everyone contributed to the scoring efforts, and the Devils clamped down on the defensive end, going through with the game plan that Coach McFadden spoke about pre-game.

The win is just one of the many impressive feats that the Blue Devils have racked up this season. They continue to drive towards an Inter-Ac title, looking to upset the heavy favorites to win the entire Inter-Ac again: Penn Charter.
Gametime Sports Player of the Game Kam Waters spoke postgame about the team’s performance, saying that the Devils are “playing better than expected.”
Defensively, we’ve picked up every team so far,” said Waters.
That defensive strength is going to be crucial to maintain the Devils’ hold on the Inter-Ac. If they’re able to continue winning and march into their showdown with Penn Charter without dropping another game, then that matchup on February 4th could dictate if the Devils could take a title home.
Right now, SCH needs to handle its business in front of them. They’ve got a few games coming up, namely against Haverford this Friday, and can’t afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to win a championship.
