At the start of the school year, longtime music director and cherished teacher Roland Woehr officially announced his plans to retire, marking the end of an era for the school’s music program. Known for his loving personality and passion for music, Mr. Woehr made it clear that he hoped his successor would share the same level of dedication.
Throughout the year, three candidates auditioned in front of the Hilltones and the Middle School Boychoir. Each candidate demonstrated their musical skills and ability to connect with students. After careful consideration, the school recently announced that David Waterland, a young musician from Delco, currently living in Texas, will take over the role starting next year.
Despite currently living out of state, Mr. Waterland was excited about the opportunity and quickly accepted the position. Last week, he joined Mr. Woehr in teaching a Hilltones class, immediately connecting with the students.
One student described him as a “younger version of Mr. Woehr,” pointing out that he dressed similarly, cracked the same jokes, and seemed genuinely excited to work with the students.
Despite the warm welcome for his successor, Mr. Woehr emphasized that his work with the students isn’t quite over. “For the next month, you’re still my boys,” he said, displaying his continued devotion to his students as he finishes out his final weeks at SCH.
As the Music Department prepares for this transition, students and staff alike are hopeful. With Mr. Waterland bringing different techniques and skills to the table and Mr. Woehr continuing to guide the program as long as he can, the future of the school’s a capella/music program appears to be in good hands.
