You might ask, what is a community fridge? Community fridges are fridges and pantries where people can donate food or take whatever food they might need. They are located all over our city – from Germantown, North Philly and South Philly. The core idea of these community fridges is mutual aid; graciously giving to your community (without knowing who is benefiting, and, without receiving thanks for your act). Especially in a city like Philadelphia, mutual aid helps fight poverty, hunger and homelessness.
Below is a map that I created detailing all of the community fridges in our community and beyond.
Key:
Community fridges are designated in dark magenta.
Local grocery stores are designated in red.
Public transportation is designated in orange.
The public transportation I’ve included is Septa’s Chestnut Hill West Line that goes from Chestnut Hill to Suburban Station. I’ve designated certain stops along the route that are near community fridges in dark orange.
Blue direction lines indicate Chestnut Hill West Lines that you can get off and on at to access community fridges.
I’ve also included driving directions from train stops to the community fridges.
My purpose in making this map is to help our SCH community learn about ways they can give back to the people around us. Feel free to click through this map. I encourage all of you – when you have some free time to go to the grocery store, get some materials, make some sandwiches and drop them off at your nearest community fridge. My intention for this map is to show how interconnected our city is. Nothing is more and a train ride away and the feeling of giving back to someone you do not know is invaluable.
