Over the past 2 years, Brendan Flatow has been the consistent voice of SCH Sports. From touchdowns to slapshots, Brendan’s CEL Project Gametime Sports has enhanced the experience of anyone looking to watch the Blue Devils from afar. Now, after being awarded the National Broadcast Production MVP by the Mascot Media Broadcast Awards, Brendan is preparing for his broadcasting career beyond SCH.
For Brendan, broadcasting has given him far more than just a strong business opportunity and chance to commentate on sports. It has also taught him important lessons that will help him long after his time at SCH comes to an end. Reflecting on what he has learned since launching GameTime Sports, Brendan stated, “The biggest lesson I’ve learned through this process is how to lead a team and how to promote and build a brand.” These skills will prove valuable to Brendan long after his graduation.
In addition to helping Brendan build skills that will be beneficial to his future career, GameTime sports has also provided a unique opportunity to members of the SCH community who want to watch the Blue Devils, but can’t attend in person. “I feel like GameTime Sports has improved the SCH community in the sense that people now have the opportunity to watch every game at SCH,” said Brendan.
Brendan’s hard work to improve the SCH community has not gone unnoticed. Recently, Brendan was awarded the prestigious National Broadcast Production MVP Award at the 5th annual Mascot Media Broadcast Awards. Reflecting on winning this award, Brendan stated, “I think that winning an award of this magnitude will be very helpful for me in the future.”
While Brendan is incredibly excited to have won a prestigious award, he believes that this moment was not the most rewarding of his broadcasting career at SCH. “The most rewarding part of GameTime Sports for me has been when athletes or viewers come up to me and tell me how much they appreciate what I’m doing because at the end of the day my mission is to make GameTime Sports an All-Star experience for every viewer.”
After reflecting on his broadcasting career at SCH, Brendan offered a piece of advice to SCH students who have a unique interest, but do not know how to turn it into a project or business. Brendan stated that he would tell younger SCH students to, “not throw away the idea because they are struggling at first. Keep working towards your goal and find someone who will support you.” Brendan also advised students to take advantage of the unique opportunities that they have at SCH. He stated, “ For SCH students, they have the unique advantage of the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL) being right down the hall, and the best advice I can give is to utilize this great resource.”
Looking forward, Brendan has a clear plan for both his future and the future of GameTime Sports, the brand that he has carefully constructed over the years. He will be attending Duquesne next year, and broadcasting his own TV Show that will air on both Duquesne’s school station and the GameTime Sports. While Brendan is at college, GameTime Sports will still be broadcasting SCH athletic events through 5 lead student broadcasters. Brendan believes that this system will be beneficial to his company, stating, “This will allow people to continue to hire GameTime Sports for their game or event, but also allow us to expand what we offer.”
