Elon Musk is currently utilizing his new xAI, Grok, to develop a potential rival to Wikipedia. This minimalist-looking website allows Grok to gather crowdsourced information from around the internet and create various articles on the relevant topics. He intends to use Grokipedia to spread “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” read his comment, which he posted on social media.
Grokipedia came around as Elon Musk’s way of unveiling the truth while still being crowdsourced by the people. With Grokipedia’s introduction, people now have more ways to get information; however, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is written by people, information from Grokipedia is being summarized by artificial intelligence. AI could be the future of digital encyclopedias, particularly with its rapid growth around the world.
Grokipedia was launched on October 27, 2025. According to the San Francisco-based Wikimedia Foundation, Grokipedia lists approximately 885,279 articles available for readers, with Grokipedia still increasing its number of articles to match that of Wikipedia’s, which adds to the contention between the two websites. This number, however, currently pales in comparison to Wikipedia’s 7 million different articles that can be read in English.
Wikimedia is still working to figure out what makes Grokipedia work; however, many say that Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to function, as Wikipedia has been used to train AI chatbots and search engines since its inception.
“As of right now, it looks like Grokipedia is mostly Wikipedia articles fed through Grok in an effort to make them ‘politically neutral’, according to Elon Musk. He believes Wikipedia has a progressive bias,” said Upper School Librarian Dan Pevear.
Some of Grokipedia’s articles look very similar to those located on Wikipedia, which led to Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, saying that people at the Wikimedia Foundation believe that Grokipedia is using Wikipedia to base or even form some of its articles. Despite the glaring similarities, some of Grokipedia’s articles vary drastically from Wikipedia’s. One such example that’s frequently used is an article on climate change. Wikipedia points out that climate change is unanimously agreed upon to be caused by human activity, while Grokipedia says that climate change is exaggerated and isn’t caused by humans. Despite this, Grokipedia may serve as a step forward for quick and easily accessible information open to the public.
It remains to be seen how AI will create the future of encyclopedias, especially with Grokipedia being so new. Despite this, the future of AI is looking optimistic, with AI taking great strides to innovate even the seemingly simplest of things.
