Among the numerous banners hanging in the Vare Gym, one team is missing a banner altogether.
Throughout the decades, SCH’s girls’ volleyball team has yet to stamp its name onto the walls.
However, in 2025, with a record of 6-2, this team managed to secure its place in SCH history, making its way into a three-way tie with Germantown Academy and Notre Dame for their first Inter-Ac title.
“Our team goal has been to ultimately win the championship,” said All Inter-Ac first teamer Maddi Moynihan. “Honestly, it doesn’t feel real.”
Many didn’t believe the Devils stood a chance. Just a few years ago, they hovered around the bottom of the Inter-Ac. “When I first transferred, [SCH’s] record was 6-11,” said All Inter-Ac second teamer, London Jackson. “Now, we only lost two games.”
But even after a good start to the season, momentum flipped when the Devils dropped back-to-back games in October. Two losses to GA and Notre Dame tied up the entire Inter-Ac. SCH controlled their own destiny, but needed to win out to guarantee a title.
Moynihan described those losses as their biggest hurdle, saying, “It was a challenge to pick ourselves up and to keep pushing forward towards our next goal.”
But the Devils had risen to challenges time and time again. With just two games remaining, they needed to win out to stay alive. On their senior day, their backs were against the wall. Entering the fourth set, tied two to two, their hopes and dreams rested on that last game.
That’s where sophomore Chloe Roberts stepped up. Up 14 to 12, SCH needed one more point to take senior day, and Roberts came through with a powerful cross shot, which bounced off the hands of Agnes Irwin’s libero and out of bounds.
Players rushed across the court, celebrating as seniors leaped up and down, rushing around Roberts as they took one step forward.
One down, one to go.
That last one was a quick victory. SCH came in with passion and intensity, taking down Baldwin in three straight sets, allowing them a third of the Inter-Ac title, splitting it with Notre Dame and Germantown Academy. This 2025 roster had officially made history.
“It means absolutely everything to me,” said senior London Jackson. “[The banner] will be here forever now. We’ll be immortalized on that wall there.”
