“I went all over D.C. interviewing people about crimes, it was really interesting,” said Sarah McDowell, reflecting on her early work with the Public Defender Service. After majoring in English and graduating a semester early, she took an internship that quickly turned into a full time role, eventually becoming a head investigator who trained others. “I was an assistant to lawyers,” she explained, describing how she helped build cases by gathering firsthand accounts across the city. Years later, after becoming a public defender and trying cases in court, she ultimately found her way to teaching, carrying with her what she calls “a lot of lives.”
