On October 23rd, an illegal internal NBA (National Basketball Association) gambling scheme was exposed by the FBI, leading to the arrest of three current and former NBA players. The men arrested were Chuancy Billups, Terry Roizer, and Damon Jones, and they were allegedly giving tips to members of the mafia about players and games.
This scandal will change a lot between NBA teams, with Billups being the current coach of the Portland Trailblazers and Rozier being an impact guard on the Heat; however, it also damages the reputation of the NBA, impacting the marketing, viewership, and public opinion of the league and possibly other professional sports leagues.
The scheme dates all the way back to 2019 and began with the rigging of poker games. Then, in 2023, it progressed to Jones, Billups, and Rozier giving non-public information about certain players’ injury status, team strategies, and their own performances. They mainly gave this information to two members of the mafia named Deniro Laster and Marves Fairley. These members would then take this information and place bets in the tens of thousands to turn a huge profit.
This is the second time since 2024 that NBA players have been connected to betting on their own games or giving insider information. In the 23-24 season, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life for disclosing private information to sports bettors, placing money on games, and affecting his own performance to win bets. Porter’s gambling scandal is connected to this recent scheme, though he was tried and found guilty earlier. If found guilty of the betting, Billups, Rozier, and Jones will likely face the same fate as Porter and be banned for life.
“It’s tough for the entire basketball world to see a situation like this,” said SCH basketball coach, Mr. McFadden ’06. “It definitely dilutes what people already think of professional basketball in comparison to college and high school. Most viewers already believe that [professional basketball] isn’t a great product for a number of reasons. A scandal like this never helps.”
The investigation into the three men in the NBA and members of the mafia is still ongoing; however, there is overwhelming evidence against them. After the case is finished, it will be interesting to see how the NBA handles the situation and the impact of sports betting around the league.
