Home runs, touchdowns, three-pointers, and more; all in the same night

Home runs, touchdowns, three-pointers, and more, all in the same night. October 23rd, 2025, was every sports fan’s dream; all four major sports in the United States overlapping, giving America a sports night to remember.

Once a year in the United States, all four professional sports leagues play on the same day in late October, a day that is called “The Sports Equinox”. The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL all play, creating a celebration of all sports across the nation. The equinox involves the World Series for baseball, Monday night football, NBA season openers, and NHL games. It is an exciting sports night, capturing many of America’s best athletes in action.

The first sports equinox occurred on October 17th, 1971, when all four major sports seasons overlapped for the first time, with game seven of the World Series, twelve NFL games, three NBA games, and six NHL games. Although there was a large gap with no sports equinoxes between 1985 and 2001, after a little over a decade, there’s been one every year dating back to 2015.

This year’s sports equinox had many significant games, with the Dodgers and Blue Jays playing game three of the World Series, which resulted in a Dodgers 6-5 victory across 18 innings, tying the second-longest World Series game in MLB history, taking six hours and 39 minutes. In addition to that, the Chiefs and Commanders participated in the Monday Night Football game on ESPN, which resulted in a large victory for the Chiefs with a score of 28-7. There were also 11 NBA games, two NHL games, and even a few playoff matches in the MLS, giving sports fans more than enough to watch

For many sports fans across the country, the night is more than just a busy night of sports. “As a 5 for 5 sports fan, I think that the sport equinox is very entertaining. It’s unfortunate that it took place on a Monday night, but I’m glad I had a free night to watch,” said Brendan Flatow ’25, Duquesne University student, broadcaster, and avid sports fan.

Even though Flatow is a fan of all sports, he sets his priorities straight during the busy night of games, stating, “I’ll watch the Phillies first, then the Eagles, then the Flyers, then MLB, then Union, and then lastly, the Sixers. So, using these priorities, I made the decision to watch all 18 innings of Game 3 of the World Series, since the Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers were not playing at the time.”.

Whether it’s primetime football, NBA basketball, or a crucial game in the World Series, the Sports Equinox provides all sports fans across the country with a night in which they don’t have to choose just one. Although it only occurs once a year, the equinox provides all fans of sports with an exciting night to enjoy a little bit of everything.
